Importance of Women Education in Islam

For many centuries, Women have been suffering from the fear of ruthless power struggles in the world. Women have been the victim of great suffering in the form of the killing witches, Sati, Hitobashira, Karo-Kari and in many another suffering. However, in the shelter of Islam, women are more protected but still many Muslim societies are still continued the practice of this patriarchy in many forms like discrimination in the salaries of men and women in workplaces, early and forced marriages and most important denial to education.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him (PBUH), brought light to the earth, when the Arab societies were exercising so many patriarchal and abhorrent activities against girls. He spread the message of Allah through Islam which supported women and its education. Women are the main source who breeds the whole family through her, sons, daughter and their sons and daughters. If they are not enlightened with the power of education and then how they are going to support their families in every walk of life. Here some facts, which shows the importance of female education in Islam. This article contains the facets which are through referencing verses of the Quran, Islam’s holy book, and hadith, authentic traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The importance of education can be seen from the first Quranic revelation:

Read in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clinging form. Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by means of the pen; taught man what he did not know. (96:1-5)

These verses are for humankind to have knowledge and analysis themselves in the light of Islam. The question arise here is that, is the acquisition of knowledge is limited to men, does it reveal by these verses. Then why are societies restricting girl’s education.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in some authentic hadith:

“He who has a slave-girl and teaches her good manners and improves her education and then manumits and marries her will get a double reward, and any slave who observes God’s right and his master’s right will get a double reward.” (emphasis added)

“Seeking knowledge is mandatory for every Muslim.”

At one occasion, Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) said that:

“If anyone travels on a road in search of knowledge, Allah will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise. The angels will lower their wings in their great pleasure with one who seeks knowledge, the inhabitants of the heavens and the Earth and the fish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned man”

“The superiority of the learned man over the devout is like that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars. The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving only knowledge, and he who takes it takes an abundant portion.” (emphasis added)”

The man here is important to ponder as it emphases humanity and mankind, not only male. These hadith also reveal superiority who seek knowledge. So the conclusion is that education denial is not even mentioned in Islam, in fact, Islam promoted their education. Either education is Islamic or non-Islamic, it is necessary for both male and female. Islamic education is important to Women as it teaches the each and every move of life.
