What is Attahiyat?

In our daily prayers, we repeat the Attahiyat is a very important ‘dua.’ At the end of the last Rakah of Prayer, we recite the same couple as prescribed. The value of Attahiyaat can be seen through a clear analogy. The end and most significant thing is every good story, speech, article, or even meeting. While Salah is a meeting between ALLAH SWT, a man, and his Creator, and something fantastic that would suggest such a deliberate and extraordinary session is warranted. Therefore salaah ends with a powerful cum dua of praise.

Attahiyyaatu Lillahi Was Salawatu Wattayyibatu Assalamu Alaika Ayyuhannabi’ yu ‘Warahmatullahi Wabarka’tuhu Assalamu Alaina Wa’ala’Ibadillahis Saa’liheen, Ash’had’ u’un La ilahaillallahu Wa Ash’hadu Anna Muhammadun Abd’ uhu Wa Rasooluh

All dominion and greatness are for Allah, and all the prayers and all good speech and action is for Him. Peace be upon you O Prophet, and likewise the Mercy of Allah and His Blessings. And peace be upon the pious servants of Allah and us. [1] I testify that none has the right to be worshiped except Allah, and I swear that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

Admittedly, most of us are unaware that Attahiyat is a part of the conversation between Our Creator Allah, and our beloved Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) during his journey of Al Isra Wal Miraj!

Meeting of Hazrat Muhammad(PBUH) with Allah:

Where Muhammad the prophet met God, he said, ‘Assalam Aleikum.’ If he met Allah, what should anyone say? We can’t wish HIM peace because all of our order sources have to be through HIM. So Prophet Muhammad Sallalahualayhiwasallam said:

“Attahiyyaatu Lillahi Was Salawatu Wattayyibatu” (All compliments, all prayer, and worship are for Allah).

Allah replied:

“Assalamu Alaika Ayyuhannabiyyu’ Warahmatullahi Wabarka’tuhu” (Peace be upon you, Oh Prophet and Allah’s Mercy and Blessings).

To this, Prophet Muhammad sallalahualayhiwasallam replied:

“Assalamu Alaina Wa’ala’Ibadillahis Saa’liheen” (Peace be on us and all good slaves of Allah)

Note* Prophet Muhammad sallalahualayhiwasallam included “us” in his reply… (and on all good slaves of Allah)

And listening to this conversation between Allah and His Messenger sallalahualayhiwasalam the Angels said:

“Ash’had’ u’un La ilahaillallahu Wa Ash’hadu Anna Muhammadun Abd’ uhu Wa Rasooluh”

(I bear witness that no one is worthy of worship except Allah And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).

Why is Attahiyat in our Prayer?

SubhanAllah!!!!! Such a lovely mixture of greetings, Duas and blessings with ALLAH, Muhammad, and His angels, His beloved Prophet. In such a daunting chat, Prophet Muhammad never forgot to mention his ummah and to offer his ummah blessing and peace.

I now understand how important it is to Attahiyat, and this discussion and how the salah prescribed us to pray every day.

Indeed, no word is as beautiful as Allah, no example as beautiful as Rasulallah(SAW). And no lesson as good as Islam, no encyclopedia so perfect as Al Quran, no prayer that’s so good as Salah (Namaz), no charity that has the importance of Zakat, no fasting diet so complete, no song as melodious as Adhaan. Because in every dimension of Islam, we are often the ones who do not discover beauty.

The Obligation of Attahiyat in prayer

Attahiyat, we say in our daily prayers, is an essential prayer. After finishing the second sajdah, his head should be raised, saying, “Allahu Akbar.” Then, you sit in the middle of the two prostrations, putting your left hand on your left knee and your right hand on your right knee. Except for the forefinger, the palm of the right side will fold up. It would help if you said in this position,
